About BioAWARE Programme


The BioAWARE Programme hosted at the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) is coordinated by representatives from public institutions including local Universities, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries; Kenya Medical Research Institution; Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services; National Biosafety Authority, and the private sector, International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications, Agri-Centre; African Biotechnology Stakeholders Forum and African Agricultural Technology Foundation.

Functions of BioAWARE Steering Committee include:

  • Promote and facilitate public knowledge and awareness about modern biotechnology, its products and issues of concern.

  • Facilitate the Secretariate to enhance nodes capacity to prepare institutional, communication and eduaction materials for public awareness.

  • Identify and generate through biotechnology education, communcation and info network (BECIN) strategic alliances to generate disagregated data on diverse areas of biotechnology activities

  • Create a better understanding on public opinion and perception particularly on percieved risks about biotechnology issues and products

  • Expand institutional engagement in knowledge networks for publications, news upadates, newsletters and annual reports.

  • Enhance legislators and policy makers confidence, trust at national and county governments for informed decision making

  • Facilitate online communication, education and outreach to exchange and share information amongst scientists, academia, industry, civil society, media, policy makers and public, interactive platform for dialogue and debates

  • Establish biotech resource designed fit target groups open access to balanced and factual infomation about biotechnology.

  • To facilitate enhanced information sharing with the national Biosafety Clearing House (BCH)

  • Develeop mechanisms for regional networking so as to harmonize access to equal access to biotechnology and biosafety activities in the region

  • Develop participatory monitoring and evaluation mechanisms on new challenges and concerns the demand attention on response to new challenges and concerns that demand attention.
